Tom's Shoes

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

On Monday, November 17, students living in the residence halls on campus helped underprivileged children in Africa by buying a pair of Tom's Shoes.

"I saw a flier for this event in my building and I was interested," said Jessica Garcia, senior, Spanish major. "I looked up more information on Tom's Shoes online and thought the concept was a great idea."

Students signed up early and paid $20 for their own pair. With this fee, students were able to choose from two colors: navy or natural. They were also able to decorate their shows with provided supplies.

"How could anyone lose," said Emily Ferrrill, senior, Biology major. "Tom's shows are normally $50, we got them for $20. Plus you can't forget the best thing that comes out of buying a pair of shoes."

Tom's shoes are known for their cause. For every pair of Tom's Shoes bought, the company will send a pair of Tom's Shoes to an underprivileged child in Africa. Though most of the students participated knew about their donation, others just wanted to decorate shoes.

"The bookstore does not sell any Long Beach shoes and I wanted some," said Nick Powell, sophomore, Recreation major. "This way I can make my own the way I want and show my Beach pride."

28 pairs of Tom's Shoes were bought and donated due to the students living in the Residence halls. For more information on Tom's Shoes visit their website at: www.tomsshoes.com

Peeping Tom or Safety?

October 30, 2008
Students living in the Residence halls have noticed that there are signs in the front of every parking lot saying, "This area subject to camera surveillance." Rumors say that instead of campus police doing rounds around the Residence halls, they have been using the cameras as a way of cracking down on illegal behavior.

"I like that idea if they are using the cameras to catch students in the act," said Kim Evans, 20, Recreation major. "I feel that students will take their illegal acts off campus if they know police are watching them through the cameras. It makes me feel safer knowing that."

According to the CSULB Crime Statistics for 2007 there were 28 motor vehicle thefts, 15 burglary's, two robberies, four sexual assaults and two aggravated assaults on campus.

"As a girl, I need to know that something bad isn't going to happen to me if I just go out to get something out of my car," said Maddy Hillis, 19, Liberal Studies. "If something goes wrong, a camera isn't going to safe my life. The campus Police just need to do their rounds more frequently."

Though some students believe these cameras could reduce crime rates, others feel strongly that the cameras are not going to help at all. But there are some who think in the middle of both situations.

"I know that Lot 20 across from the dorms hardly has any light during the night and the shuttles run until midnight," said Craig Schultz, 20, Film and Electronic Arts. "I see the cameras as an extra eye for the parking lots but I don't think it is right if the Police are using the cameras to just spy on people. Police need to do their rounds around the Residence halls and use the cameras as extra leverage for the parking lots only."

Residence Wars Come to a Close

October 16, 2008

Every year, Residence battles Parkside in a competition to see who is best. The competition took over four days, having students compete in relays to trivia. This year, Parkside didn't show up.

"Because Parkside didn't show up, the competition was between Los Alamitos and Residence because they were the only ones who wanted to participate," said Demetra Frangis, 20, supporter of Residence. "They seemed to have fun anyways, which is all that matters."

During the first competition, dodgeball, Los Alamitos beat Residence 3-2 in a best out of five games.

"It was kind of unorganized anyways," said Ivan Kwan, 20, on Residence. "People just showed up and started playing. It was like our team [Residence] with two guys and five girls against seven guys. But it was fun for a while."

The next the war continued without Parkside. In the trivia challenge Residence had come back to make the war's score tied at one all.

"To watch the trivia was fun," said Elise Blum, 20. "The only thing that I didn't like was that there weren't that many students participating and there weren't many spectators either."

With only two competitions left in the war, Los Alamitos took victory in the scavenger hunt and the relay. Leaving the final score 3-1.

"Hopefully next year Parkside will decide to participate," said Kevin Meikle, 20, on Los Alamitos. "We are supposed to be on Residence side, not against them."
